Scaling Up Prevention Of Child Trafficking with The Freedom Story
Fighting human trafficking can feel overwhelming, yet ECCA is committed to amplifying impact alongside The Freedom Story in Northern Thailand. Through a new three-year partnership, ECCA aims to scale The Freedom Story’s successful model by engaging grassroots partners. This initiative seeks to develop and disseminate accessible resources, providing targeted training and capacity-building support to empower local communities in implementing effective strategies for child trafficking prevention.
Challenge

Human trafficking is a global crisis, forcing individuals into slave-like conditions and various forms of abuse and exploitation, including the sexual exploitation of children for profit. In Thailand, 425,500 people live in modern slavery, with poverty and lack of education being significant risk factors that make children especially vulnerable to traffickers.
The equation is clear: Lack of Education = Lack of Options = Vulnerability. Research by Simon Baker on commercially sexually exploited children in Chiang Rai indicates that education enrolment figures are a key indicator of children at risk of child prostitution. Human trafficking expert Louise Shelley notes that those trafficked are often the least educated; in the tri-border area of Thailand, 22% of surveyed prostitutes had never attended school, and 41.5% had only some primary education. In northern Thailand, 9.9% of children never attended school and for those who do, 57% drop out before finishing high school. Given these statistics, it is no surprise that northern Thailand remains a breeding ground for the country’s commercial sex industry. Estimates suggest over 60,000 children are sexually exploited for commercial gain in Thailand each year.
Approach

The Freedom Story believes in stopping trafficking and exploitation before they start. To cut off the supply, they provide scholarships, tutoring, and classes in math and foreign languages to equip at-risk students with essential tools for success. Their mentorship and support programs foster resilience, and their human rights education empowers students about their sexual and legal rights. Additionally, sustainable livelihoods programs promote independence in vulnerable communities.
Despite significant successes, reaching remote areas remains a challenge. ECCA is partnering with The Freedom Story to pilot a new partnership model involving grassroots and civil organizations at the source. This initiative aims to develop their effective model into bite-size materials. Through targeted training and capacity-building support, these resources will empower partner communities to effectively implement strategies for child trafficking prevention. This collaborative effort seeks to catalyze social change, ensuring children in these communities have better opportunities to complete their education and achieve brighter futures.
