Growing Alternate Talent for the Engineering Sector (GATES) by Trampolene

Growing Autistic Talent for Engineering Sector (GATES) is a 30-month pilot program aimed at securing sustainable and skilled employment in the engineering sector for tertiary-educated individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

This initiative is supported by a pay-for-success model/social impact bond and is a collaboration with nonprofit partner Trampolene, who specializes in job training and placement for PWDs, particularly those with ASD, focusing on high-skilled roles in engineering. ECCA participated as an outcomes funder in this partnership, contributing to its success in empowering individuals through meaningful employment opportunities in the engineering field.

Challenge

In Singapore, individuals with autism encounter substantial barriers to securing long-term employment. These challenges stem from societal stigma, inadequate awareness about autism in professional settings, and a lack of support for necessary accommodations. Many employers are unfamiliar with the capabilities of individuals with autism and may hesitate to hire them, resulting in limited job prospects. Furthermore, workplaces often lack the necessary adaptations to support the unique needs of employees with autism, which can hinder their performance and retention.

Trampolene’s “Growing Alternate Talent For Engineering Sector (GATES)” program is dedicated to empowering tertiary-educated individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) through targeted career development. The program begins with intensive off-site training, where participants learn technical and soft skills essential for engineering roles. Trampolene collaborates closely with employers to prepare work environments and train supervisors to effectively support individuals with ASD and PWDs.

During a three-month on-site probationary period, job coaches facilitate smooth transitions and address any challenges that arise. Successful candidates transition into permanent roles, with ongoing training and support provided. Trampolene also works with employers to create ASD-friendly workplaces through workshops and tailored management guidance.

Family-based interventions are also integral, supporting caregivers in understanding and encouraging their loved one’s career aspirations. This holistic approach ensures long-term employment success for individuals with ASD and PWDs in the engineering sector.
