Capacity Development with Turning Tables Denmark
ECCA is supporting Turning Tables Denmark (TTDK) with flexible core capacity funding and strategic guidance to enhance their work in harnessing the transformative power of art and culture for youth. TTDK aims to expand into a larger organization with three full-fledged cultural labs across Denmark. These labs will empower children and youth through creative projects, helping them shape new narratives for their futures. Additionally, the labs will serve as safe spaces within each social housing area, fostering collaboration among families and nurturing environments that promote relationship building and community resilience.
Challenge

In Denmark, many young people face unimaginable challenges, grappling with complex social and mental issues. They are often excluded from mainstream educational and employment opportunities, residing on the fringes of society with a risk of lifelong vulnerability. Co-creation is pivotal in bringing about lasting change. Despite numerous reforms over decades, approximately 42,000 young people, comprising 6% to 8% of Danish youth, remain without jobs or access to education. This figure has stagnated for about 25 years despite various political initiatives aimed at reduction. The repercussions of fragile social networks and exclusion are profound, undermining fundamental values of democracy and welfare in Danish society, alongside substantial economic costs. Addressing these challenges is not only a moral imperative but essential for fostering an inclusive and thriving community for all.
Approach

Turning Tables establishes youth-run cultural labs strategically located within residential areas where children and youth reside and interact. In their own home turf, professional instructors with backgrounds in creative academia and strong social skills collaborate with young participants on music projects, photography, and videography. They engage youth not only as educators but as fellow artists in creative co-creation, fostering high-quality works that boost participants’ confidence and sustain their project involvement. To manage the complexities of working with youth, Turning Tables continually enhances staff skills, integrating social work knowledge with artistic expertise through partnerships for ongoing training and supervision in relational work with vulnerable youth.
Beyond creative projects, Turning Tables actively supports children and youth to participate in music and art festivals and events, often securing paid assignments. This involvement instills a sense of self-worth and recognition of their innate creative potential, whether expressed through rap lyrics, poetry, or film. The cultural labs also serve as community hubs, where youth shape activities like weekend movie nights, cooking classes, and exhibitions, promoting cohesion within social housing areas. Turning Tables believes deeply in the transformative power of art and culture for youth, emphasizing the reciprocal impact young people can have on Denmark’s arts and culture scene.
