Safeguarding Coral Reefs with COREsea

ECCA first engaged with COREsea during the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly affected their conservation work and revenue due to travel restrictions and halted internships. ECCA responded by providing an initial grant to support COREsea during this crisis. Recognizing COREsea’s potential in marine research and conservation, ECCA decided to expand the partnership. This includes supporting the organization through a key leadership transition and providing organizational development support to enhance their conservation efforts in Thailand.

Challenge

Coral reefs, essential to marine biodiversity, face severe threats from climate change. Increased ocean temperatures and acidification, driven by higher CO2 levels, lead to widespread coral bleaching and degradation. In Thailand, popular coral reefs, such as those in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, have experienced significant bleaching events, impacting marine life and local communities. Coral reefs support a vast array of marine life, but warming oceans cause corals to expel the algae they rely on for energy, leading to coral bleaching and eventual death if conditions don’t improve. Over the past few decades, significant coral cover has been lost globally, with estimates indicating that over half of the world’s reefs have degraded due to climate change, overfishing, and pollution. The loss of coral reefs not only affects marine ecosystems but also impacts coastal communities in Thailand that depend on them for food, tourism, and coastal protection.

COREsea focuses on long-term coral monitoring and marine conservation research. As the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources’ eyes on the island, they provide crucial data on coral reef health, fish populations, and sea water conditions. Additionally, COREsea offers internships and educational courses that equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute effectively to marine conservation efforts. Through our collaboration with COREsea, ECCA aims to enhance coral reef resilience and protect marine biodiversity in Thailand. ECCA supports COREsea through organizational development and leadership transition assistance, enabling them to expand their conservation efforts. This partnership not only advances scientific research but also promotes community engagement and awareness, fostering a sustainable approach to marine conservation.
