Challenge

Young people today are facing a growing set of interconnected challenges that affect their emotional and social well-being. Social disparities are one key issue, where students from different socio-economic backgrounds often find it difficult to relate to one another, leading to discrimination and bullying. For instance, students from more privileged backgrounds with global exposure may struggle to connect with peers who have limited opportunities, exacerbating social exclusion and misunderstandings. This divide is evident in the increasing difficulty for individuals earning less than $2,000 a month to mix with people from other income groups, a figure that has grown from 25% in 2018 to 54% in 2024.

Another significant challenge is the lack of emotional awareness and holistic development. Schools are often under pressure to prioritize academic performance, which can overshadow the importance of developing essential emotional and social skills. As a result, students may lack the tools to manage their emotions, build empathy, and communicate effectively with others. This gap in emotional education can leave students unprepared to navigate social dynamics, resulting in missed opportunities for meaningful connections and heightened emotional distress.

The vulnerability of youth is another crucial factor. Adolescents, during a critical period of cognitive and emotional development, are highly influenced by the actions and words of their peers. Without proper guidance and support, this influence can lead to harmful behaviors such as bullying and social exclusion. In this environment, young people need the right tools and guidance to develop emotional resilience and navigate the complexities of peer relationships effectively. These challenges highlight the urgent need for interventions that equip youth with emotional intelligence, empathy, and the skills to manage complex social situations.

Approach

The NEMO program builds on insights from the Bettr Fellowship, empowering students and youth leaders aged 13 and above in Singapore to develop emotional intelligence (EQ) using the Six Seconds model. By teaching students to understand and manage their emotions, NEMO addresses issues like bullying, social exclusion, and emotional distress through early intervention and positive peer influence.

NEMO tackles the root causes of youth challenges, offering sustainable solutions that contribute to long-term community resilience. By incorporating teacher training, expanding its reach, and hosting EQ pop-up events, the program aims to engage the broader community, promote healthier, emotionally resilient youth and contribute to an inclusive school environment.

To ensure sustainability, NEMO seeks funding and partnerships from relevant stakeholders in the public and social sectors and intends to use co-payment models and impactful communications to drive lasting change.
