DMJX Scholarships with the Danish School of Media and Journalism
ECCA has an ongoing partnership with the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) in Aarhus, Denmark, to support photojournalists who would otherwise not have the opportunity to pursue advanced studies. This collaboration provides scholarships covering tuition fees, board, and lodging, enabling them to further their education in DMJX’s world-renowned programs.
Challenge

Photojournalists often face significant obstacles in pursuing their professional ambitions, especially those living in countries with limited resources. Political limitations can stifle freedom of expression, making it difficult to cover stories without facing censorship or repercussions. Additionally, the lack of infrastructure and professional environments hinders the development of skills and creativity. Many aspiring photojournalists struggle to find affordable and high-quality educational courses, which are scarce and often out of reach financially. This lack of access to resources and training impedes their ability to refine their craft and gain the inspiration needed to excel in the field.
Approach

ECCA has partnered with the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) in Aarhus to offer full scholarships for photojournalists who would otherwise not have the opportunity to pursue advanced studies. DMJX’s renowned programs, with a strong focus on storytelling and ethics, have profoundly shaped many photographers’ approaches, encouraging them to uncover and narrate the stories of the people they photograph.
ECCA-funded scholarships cover tuition fees, board, and lodging, allowing students to focus on their studies. The program includes two courses: Photo I, which focuses on the language of photojournalism and integrates journalistic disciplines like writing and sound, and Photo II, which delves into advanced visual storytelling for complex narratives. Scholars who complete Photo I can apply for a second scholarship to pursue Photo II.
This support enables scholars to deepen their artistic expression, explore creativity, and make significant strides in their careers. Many past scholars have used this opportunity to advance their careers, win awards, and launch their own projects, demonstrating the transformative impact of this initiative.
