Bangkok 1899 by Creative Migration
Bangkok 1899 is a vibrant cultural space advancing sustainability through the arts, offering exhibitions, workshops, dialogues, and an international artist residency that connects Thai and global artists with local communities. Sustainability is central to its operations, with climate impact reporting for all events and strict eco-friendly policies on materials, production, and waste.
In 2024, Creative Migration launched Creatives for Climate Action – Thailand (CCAT), partnering with the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) Cluster Thailand and the Creative Economy Agency. The first CCAT conference united European and Thai stakeholders to promote climate action in the cultural sector, highlighting the need for international and intersectional collaboration.
Challenge

Despite increasing awareness of the climate crisis, meaningful intersections between arts, culture, and climate action remain limited. Emerging artists—especially those focused on sustainability and social impact—often face challenges accessing support, funding, and platforms to showcase their work. While creativity has immense potential to bridge awareness and tangible action, the lack of dedicated spaces for cross-sector collaboration restricts artists and cultural practitioners from engaging with climate issues at scale.
Bangkok 1899 aims to fill this gap by establishing itself as a leading hub for arts-driven environmental advocacy. However, securing long-term sustainability for the space remains an ongoing challenge.
Approach

With support from ECCA Family Foundation, Creative Migration is strengthening its foundation to become a sustainable hub for arts, culture, and climate action. Key initiatives include improving staff retention and growth by aligning salaries with industry standards and hiring critical roles such as Communications & Program Assistant and Office & Program Assistant to boost operational capacity.
The organization is investing in professional development to equip staff with skills to navigate the evolving creative and sustainability sectors. Revitalizing PR and marketing is a priority, featuring a new website launch, expanded media outreach, and enhanced social media engagement to increase visibility and impact. Operational upgrades will streamline administration, improve financial transparency, and reinforce sustainability practices like recycling and composting.
Creative Migration will also diversify revenue by leveraging the Creatives for Climate Action 2024 Toolkit to offer sustainability consulting and expanding venue rentals for corporate events, cultural gatherings, and artistic productions.
