To drive greater green transformation among companies and help workers upskill accordingly, eight unions under the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) have partnered with local agencies and businesses in support of Singapore’s sustainable development efforts.
On Monday (September 23), NTUC announced in a press release that its Electronics, Marine & Engineering Cluster – comprising eight unions – has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with non-profit organization Trampolene Ltd., The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), and technology firm HP Singapore.
According to the release, this collaboration aims to encourage businesses to adopt sustainable practices and promote green skills training, thereby equipping workers with the necessary expertise to support growth in the electronics, marine, and engineering sectors.
Under this initiative, the NTUC Electronics, Marine & Engineering Cluster will work with partners in three key areas:
- Partnering with Trampolene to help engineering graduates with special needs from local institutes of higher learning find employment with companies affiliated with the eight unions;
- Providing relevant training for Professionals, Managers, and Executives (PMEs). IES will start with the manufacturing sector and develop specialized programs for engineers across various industries. Singapore’s manufacturing sector currently employs over 360,000 people, nearly 70% of whom are in PME roles;
- HP Singapore will offer a curated suite of professional courses to help companies strengthen their sustainability capabilities and embark on green transformation.
Meanwhile, as more companies adopt sustainable manufacturing solutions, employees will need to develop skills related to ESG and carbon emissions. To address this, the NTUC Electronics, Marine & Engineering Cluster will collaborate with Trampolene and IES to promote NTUC’s Company Training Committees (CTCs) and CTC Grant schemes to the industry.
NTUC introduced the Company Training Committees in 2019 to work with employers to improve productivity and develop training plans that help employees upskill and expand their career opportunities. As of August this year, the Electronics, Marine & Engineering Cluster has established over 200 CTCs. A total of 41 companies have received grants, benefiting more than 900 local employees through skills upgrading, salary increases, or improved career prospects.
